    16 Days Against Gender Violence

    In the context of the 16 days of activism against gender violence, the U.S. Embassy organized an event at the Municipality of Port Louis. Minister Mireille Martin, Lord Mayor Mamade Khodabaccus and the U.S. Embassy’s Chargé d’Affaires (CDA) Troy Fitrell attended the event.

    The U.S. Embassy and the Port Louis - USA Alumni Association (PLUSAAA) organized an event at Cité Florida in Baie du Tombeau. CDA Fitrell made remarks at this symbolic event, which also included the testimonial of patients living with HIV.

    PAO Vanessa Harper addresses women at an event in the context of GEW at the Mauritius Alliance of Women. Mrs. Nivedita Nathoo, participant at the African Women Entrepreneurship Program (AWEP) in the U.S. recently, was also present to share her American experience with other women entrepreneurs.

    PAO Vanessa Harper addresses students at a General Advising Session in the context of International Education Week. The IEW is an opportunity to attract future leaders from abroad to study, learn, and exchange experiences in the United States.

    Daniel Pearl World Music Day 2011

    The third Daniel Pearl World Music Days were celebrated in Mauritius on Saturday October 22 at the Institut Français de Maurice. Several local artists participated. The event was marked by the live painting of a portrait of Daniel Pearl by youths of Anoska (center).

    The U.S. Embassy organized a presentation on Cultural Heritage Preservation at the Municipality of Port Louis on October 6. Councillors, officials of the Embassy and members of the Port Louis-US Alumni Association attended.

    Equipment Grant to the Mauritius Police Force

    The Embassy through the Chargé d'Affaires Troy Fitrell donated IT equipment to the Mauritius Police Force on October 5. The IT Unit of the police force has been engaging in Anti-Terrorism Assistance (ATA) training since 2008.

    Agricultural Biotechnology Workshop

    An Agricultural Biotechnology Workshop led by Dr. Peter Gregory, Agricultural Biotechnology Consultant at Cornell University, was held at Domaine Les Pailles, on October 12. The workshop focused on the Institutional System for Agricultural Biotechnology Research, Development and Regulation in Mauritius.

    During a stop in Mauritius, sailors from the USS Roosevelt engaged in a community relations event at the Seeneevassen Primary School in Cassis. They also played a basketball game against the Mahebourg Flipppers which was won by the latter.

    Consular Officer Liz Kuhse, accompanied by POL David Campbell and GSO Kendra Kirkland, tells journalists about the Diversity Visa (DV) Program 2013 (Green Card Lottery) which kicked off on October 4. Mauritians were encouraged to apply.

    The U.S. Embassy has been actively involved in the IPR awareness campaign in Mauritius in the past 3 years. Three Cooperative Grant Agreements for a total amount of Rs 750,000 with the Mauritius Society of Authors (MASA), Microsoft and the National Computer Board were signed.

    CDA Troy Fitrell and Mrs. Fitrell hosted Eid Dinner at Macarty House on Friday, September 16. Deputy Prime Minister Dr. Rashid Beebeejaun, Mrs Beebeejaun and several other distinguished guests attended the event.

    USD 16000 Equipment Grant to ICAC

    Equipment including computer towers, consumables and digital forensics software worth some US$ 16000 (about Rs 480 000) were handed over officially by Chargé d’Affaires Troy Fitrell to the ICAC Director Anil Kumar Ujoodha today. This equipment has been sent by the Anti-Terrorism Assistance Program (ATA). The ATA program trains civilian security and law enforcement personnel from friendly governments in police procedures that deal with terrorism.

    This workshop on Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) procedures is to help increase Mauritian agricultural exports to the U.S. APHIS is the regulatory agency for countries wishing to export agricultural products to the U.S. Mauritius is interested in securing a market for its pineapples, lychees, palm hearts, and bread fruit.

    SBR was in Mauritius as part of its involvement with APS. The visit featured on board classroom training in areas of damage control, fire fighting, search and rescue planning and electrical maintenance. A community service project and a soccer match with the NCG also took place.

    U.S. Embassy First Social Media Workshop

    The first ever workshop to be held in Mauritius on social media was organized by the U.S. Embassy. It gathered media practitioners and students, who were able to discuss the growing importance and use of social media with local and U.S. experts, including Eduardo Cue who spoke live from Paris.

    The USS Samuel B. Roberts was in Mauritius in September as part of its involvement with Africa Partnership Station (APS) East Hub. Several tens of Mauritius police officers trained on board the "Sammie B" during this its stay, in several advanced skills.

    Political Officer David Campbell was at the Line Barracks to deliver certificates to APS students from Mauritius, the Seychelles, Kenya and Tanzania. POL Officer Campbell spoke of the importance of APS namely to address piracy, human trafficking and illegal fishing.

    APS Training in Mauritius - Week 1

    Sailors from multinational militaries trained aboard two Mauritian National Coast Guard vessels as part of their involvement in Africa Partnership Station (APS) East.The training focused on vessel boarding search and seizure (VBSS), a procedure used by military and law enforcement agencies to combat piracy, human trafficking, and smuggling of illicit drugs and weapons.

    This cup offered by the Ambassador of the United Sates in Mauritius was was won this year by Appeal Board from the Gujadhur stable. The America Challenge Cup was presented by Chargé d’Affaires Troy Fitrell at the Mauritius Turf Club (MTC), which has just celebrated its 199th anniversary.

    African Security Conference

    The US Africa Command held a conference in Mauritius in June, focusing on piracy in the region. Participants from Mauritius, Seychelles, Kenya, Tanzania, Mozambique and South Africa discussed the growing problem of piracy and how best to address this issue. CDA Troy Fitrell also gave remarks for the occasion.

    ESU Spelling Bee Competition

    English Speaking Union’s annual Spelling Bee competition, co-sponsored by the U.S. Embassy, was held on Wednesday June 1 at the Town Hall of the Municipality of Curepipe. The main pronouncer was the Embassy’s Public Affairs Officer Craig White. Several students of Form I-IV participated in the finals.

    African Presidential Round Table 2011

    Former Presidents Mbeki, Chissano, Offman and Uteem are among the former African leaders present at the African Presidential Round Table 2011. A welcome reception hosted by Charge d’Affaires Troy Fitrell was held at Macarty House ahead of the opening ceremony of the conference.

    The U.S. Embassy, Port Louis, participated at Career World 2011, the higher education fair organized by the Rotary Club of Grand Baie. Numerous students and parents enquired about study opportunities in the U.S. there.
