As the holidays approach and you’re in a gift giving spirit, it’s a good time to think about the gift of life.
Hi, I’m Dr. Griffin Rodgers, bringing you Healthy Moments from the NIH. I’m the Director of the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases.
As African Americans, we’re at a greater risk than the general population for developing kidney disease. And for certain people with kidney failure, transplantation may be the best option to restore function of the failed kidneys.
Unfortunately, the number of kidneys donated by our community is low – so it’s difficult to match donors and recipients.
The Minority Organ and Tissue Transplant Education Program (MOTTEP) is making efforts to promote minority donations and transplants. And, we’ve seen some recent increases in donations – but we need to see more.
For additional information, visit organdonor.gov or MyMajicDC.com . This is Dr. Griffin Rodgers. Join me next week for more “Healthy Moments.”
