Caring for your kidneys could give you a new lease on life.
Hi, I’m Dr. Griffin Rodgers, bringing you Healthy Moments from the NIH. I’m the Director of the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases.
Your kidneys play an important role in keeping you healthy. Located in the middle of your back, just below your rib cage, your kidneys filter blood and remove waste products and extra water, producing urine. If your kidneys do not remove these wastes, they can build up in your blood and cause grave damage to your body.
If diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease, or kidney disease runs in your family, you are at high risk for kidney disease and should get tested. If you find out that you have kidney disease, you can take action to prevent your kidneys from failing.
