More than 200,000 people in the U.S., under 20, have type 1 or type 2 diabetes. Since it needs to be managed 24/7, students with diabetes need the support of school staff.
Hi, I’m Dr. Griffin Rodgers, bringing you Healthy Moments. I’m the Director of the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases at NIH.
Back to school is a good time for school staff to ensure that students with diabetes have the support they need. Students may need to monitor their blood glucose levels and take insulin at school, so it’s important that school staff be prepared.
To help school staff support students with diabetes, we have a free publication called Helping the Student with Diabetes Succeed, A Guide for School Personnel. It includes recommendations to help schools provide a safe learning environment for students with diabetes.
To download the guide, visit yourdiabetesinfo.org. This is Dr. Griffin Rodgers. Join me next week for more Healthy Moments.
