As your kids head back to school, add smart snacks to your list of school supplies.
Hi, I’m Dr. Griffin Rodgers bringing you Healthy Moments from the NIH. I’m the Director of the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases.
It’s really important for teens with type 2 diabetes to make healthy food choices. They need to control their weight for life and stay fit in order to avoid complications such as heart disease and high blood pressure.
Most teens, including those with type 2 diabetes, need to eat healthy snacks, such as:
- A cup of veggies with salsa or a piece of fresh fruit.
- Three cups of low-fat microwave popcorn.
- Or a small bowl of whole grain cereal with non-fat or low-fat milk.
And they should drink a couple of glasses of water with their snacks.
