As African Americans, we make up about 12 percent of the population. But when it comes to kidney failure, we account for 28 percent of new cases – and that’s cause for concern.
Hi, I’m Dr. Griffin Rodgers, bringing you Healthy Moments. I’m the director of the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases at NIH.
We can work together to lower the rate of kidney disease. Since many of us turn to places of worship to discuss health issues, I’ve invited Pastor David Cobb to share his experience. Reverend, how did you find out about your kidney disease?
“I went to the doctor because I … felt like I couldn’t get better from what I thought was the flu. My doctor, he tried different things and then finally my blood work came back in and my doctor talked to me and made me aware that I did have kidney disease”
In coming weeks, we’ll talk about who should get tested for kidney disease.
