About the U.S. Commercial Service

The U.S. Commercial Service is the trade promotion arm of the U.S. Department of Commerce’s International Trade Administration. Located across the United States and in U.S. Embassies and Consulates in more than 75 countries, our global network of trade professionals connects U.S. companies with international buyers, providing them with market intelligence, trade counseling, business matchmaking, advocacy and commercial diplomacy support.

About the Position

Commercial Officers are Foreign Service Officers of the United States of America, appointed by the President with the advice and consent of the Senate to represent the government of the United States before foreign sovereign states.  Commercial Officers carry out a wide variety of critical functions and work with a broad spectrum of government and private sector organizations to articulate, develop and refine United States commercial policy, promote U.S. exports and to protect U.S. commercial interests abroad.

Requirements

  • Possess a BA or BS degree and have three years of specialized trade promotion experience or a MA or MS Degree or other graduate degree and two years of specialized trade promotion experience.
  • Be a U.S. citizen.
  • Be between the ages of 21 and 59
  • Be available for a worldwide assignment and be willing to relocate approximately every 3-4 years.
  • Be able to obtain Medical and Top Secret Security clearances and pass a drug test.

How to Apply

The U.S. Commercial Service Assessment is a competitive, oral and written examination used to recruit new, tenure-track Foreign Service Officers into the U.S. Commercial Service. Successful applicants who pass the initial online application screening process receive an invitation for the one-day oral assessment.
