Physical Rehabilitative Support

Each organization listed in the AW2 Community Support Network offers services that are either covered by insurance or free to AW2 Soldiers, Veterans, and their Families. AW2 Soldiers, Veterans, and Families are encouraged to contact these organizations directly for more information about the services they offer.

Backcountry Adaptive Connection features summer and winter adaptive conditioning activities in order to improve fitness ranging from beginner to Paralympics competitor.

Bancroft Brain Injury Services External Link, Opens in New Window

Bancroft Brain Injury Services offers a true continuum of care providing a uniquely comprehensive program that can accommodate Veterans with acquired brain injury from the post acute hospital phase throughout the recovery process. They provide day program, vocational therapy (OT/PT/SLP) and residential services in the following areas of New Jersey, Cherry Hill, Voorhees, Plainsboro, Brick Twp, and Mullica Hill. Their In-home services team provides cognitive therapy services for individuals in the natural setting of their home or community and has a broader service area. Their licensed clinical neuropsychologists provide testing, evaluation and treatment.

Capital Region Nordic Alliance (CRNA) is a not for profit outdoor Nordic recreation alliance, located in the capital region of New York State, focusing on year round activities in the Nordic Sports of Biathlon, Orienteering, Snowshoeing and Cross-Country Skiing. To meet its goal of complete access to all populations, particularly those with special needs or who are disabled, the Capital Region Nordic Alliance provides comprehensive education and mentoring assuring maximal benefit to all. We create a healthy outdoor community environment by promoting all alliance activities in grounded education and mentoring and foster the growth of not only their Nordic sport but other Alliance sports through hosting events open to the broader community year round with appropriate staff ensuring safe; enjoyable events. We include the entire greater community regardless of ability or orientation and collaborate with local or regional organizations to assure the sports and their events have a positive economic impact on the region.

Combat Wounded Veterans of South Mississippi is a non-profit organization that provides support to our local wounded warriors of all services to include, financial resources, assistance with VA benefits, employment, and spiritual. We collaborate with other local organizations to facilitate the needs of our Mississippi Wounded Warriors.

HAVE-Alaska is an Alaska-based organization dedicated to promoting the physical and psychological rehabilitation of American Veterans injured in service to our country through outdoor activities and travel. Our mission is to fund and facilitate activities in Alaska for American Veterans, their spouses, and dependents. We provide activities such as fishing, boating, whitewater rafting, hunting, kayaking, flight seeing, snowmobile tours, gold panning, bicycling, cruise vacations, cultural tours, wildlife viewing, National Park tours, dog mushing, skiing, etc.

Heartbeat Serving Wounded Warriors recognizes that the road to recovery is a long and difficult one for the wounded warrior Family and offers emergency assistance for those who qualify. Heartbeat also offers morale programs, including adopting wounded warrior Families for Christmas, new therapeutic programs, such as Back in the Saddle Warriors and Scuba Warriors, and Assignment, Recovery & Comfort kits for newly wounded personnel.

Heroes on the Water serves all military personnel who have been wounded, injured, or disabled, physically or mentally, while serving on active duty, in the Reserves, or National Guard. The program's primary goal is to assist injured servicemembers with their physical and mental recovery by introducing them to the therapeutic qualities of fishing from kayaks. The program allows participants to decompress from the stresses associated with combat and the physical rigors of rehabilitation.

Higher Ground is a sports rehabilitation program based in Sun Valley, Idaho, and La Jolla, California, serving individuals with traumatic brain injuries, post-traumatic stress disorder, polytrauma, and other injuries. The program offers ten week-long sports camps: snow sports, water sports, ocean sports, and fly fishing. Camps are free for wounded warriors and spouses, and child care is provided. Group sizes are small to encourage friendships and individual instruction.

Hope For The Warriors works to enhance the quality of life for servicemembers and their Families nationwide who have been affected by injuries or death in the line of duty. Their programs offer a full cycle of support, starting with Immediate Needs financial assistance, and continuing through A Warrior's Wish, Warrior's Hope & Morale, Above & Beyond professional development, spouse/caregiver scholarships, Team Hope For The Warriors, and other programs.

Johnny's New Hope is a veteran owned organization whose primary mission is to provide housing for military Veterans and their families. Cabins are available for emergency housing to get heroes back on their feet. Johnny's New Hope also provides food, clothing, and home renovations.

Meet Yourself Yoga Therapy External Link, Opens in New Window

Meet Yourself Yoga Therapy (MTYT) provides one-on-one and couples yoga therapy, as well group classes. MTYT currently offers classes and private sessions at the VA Long Beach Healthcare System. Benefits from this body-oriented therapy that includes self-inquiry include: increased sense of calm and joy, engagement in life, ability to sleep better and manage moods more easily. In addition, intrusive thoughts and avoidance of situations are lessened. Interpersonal relationships are improved as self-awareness increases. No knowledge of yoga needed, nor flexibility in the body.

The Medical Team, Inc. offers comprehensive post-acute rehabilitation and treatment services in the comfort of patients' homes. It operates Medicare-certified home health agencies in Louisiana, Michigan, Texas, and Virginia. All agencies are Tricare in-network providers. The company is dedicated to providing high-quality, cost effective health care services ranging from assistance with the activities of daily living to highly specialized therapies, including wound care, management, and a unique, evidence-based behavioral health program to assist individuals and Families struggling with behavioral health disorders.

The Michael J. Novosel Foundation supports wounded warriors with a wide variety of services, including financial counseling and support, advocacy, and other personalized support.

NARHA Horses for Heroes assists Veterans through services provided by NARHA members and by providing leadership and guidance for equine-assisted activities and therapies. To accomplish this mission, NARHA centers connect with individual Veterans and Department of Veterans Affairs medical centers and clinics. Veterans of any age can benefit from the program and by being involved with equines.

NeuroRestorative is the leading provider of post-acute specialized brain injury rehabilitation programs. With more than 100 programs located in 20 states, they offer specialized, innovative rehabilitation in environments of care are carefully created to provide NeuroRehabilitation, NeuroBehavioral, Supported Living, In-Home Supports or Outpatient Treatment. They are a contracted provider with the VA Assisted Living Pilot Program for Veterans with Traumatic Brain Injury and are privileged to serve service members with brain injury using their TriCare benefit.

Our Forgotten Warriors provides short-term structured housing for active duty servicemembers and Veterans who recently sustained emotional and cognitive injuries in the line of duty. The staff helps warriors increase their level of independent functioning. The staff affirms warriors as the heroes they are and increase the warriors' determination to overcome obstacles and challenge others to follow their example.

Pets for Patriots helps Veterans, servicemembers, and wounded warriors from any branch of service through companion pet adoption. Companion pets help Veterans and their Families by reducing stress, depression, and loneliness, while improving physical mobility. Pets also boost children's self-esteem and ability to relate to others. To make pet ownership affordable and sustainable, Pets for Patriots provides access to reduced cost veterinary care and discounts for pet food, toys, and supplies.

Project Healing Waters Fly Fishing, Inc. is dedicated to the physical and emotional rehabilitation of disabled active duty military personnel and Veterans through fly fishing and fly tying education and outings.

Rehabilitation Hospital of the Pacific  External Link, Opens in New Window

Rehabilitation Hospital of the Pacific (REHAB) has been serving patients who have suffered both major and minor injuries for almost 60 years. As the only hospital dedicated to physical rehabilitation in Hawaii, REHAB offers the expertise, facilities, and specialized clinic programs to help a person recover to their highest level of function. Specialized clinic programs include: Traumatic Brain Injury, Spinal Cord Injury, Stroke, Amputee Women's' Health, Arthritis, Polytrauma and generalized orthopedic and neurological injures. REHAB offer both inpatient and outpatient services.

R.O.C.K. Ride On Center for Kids External Link, Opens in New Window

R.O.C.K. Ride On Center for Kids is an equine-assisted therapy center. R.O.C.K. provides hippotherapy and therapeutic riding to current and former military personnel who served in Iraq and Afghanistan and have injuries resulting from their service. This program is provided at no charge to the Veterans and Soldiers. Physical needs for recovery are addressed through safe, individual plans with the clients to achieve their goals.

SMART's Horses for Heroes program is a recreational and therapeutic horseback riding and carriage driving program serving military servicemen and women Veterans and their Families. This program is provided at no cost to these individuals. Our goal is to help ease Soldiers and their Families through their transitions back to civilian and Family life, as well as assist wounded warriors in their rehabilitation from war-related injuries. We are proud to serve those who have served. SMART is a non-profit organization and has been serving the community since 1987.

The Scott Rigsby Foundation is dedicated to inspiring, informing, and enabling physically-challenged individuals with loss of limb or mobility to live an active lifestyle. They promote the health and fitness of physically challenged individuals by improving access to equipment and resources, while advancing technology and improving the long-term transition care network. Through the AW2 Community Support Network, they seek to enable all wounded warriors to cross their personal finish lines.

Sentinels of Freedom Scholarship Foundation provides scholarships to severely wounded members of America's Armed Forces. The program helps them readjust to civilian life and prosper in their hometowns or new communities. Local volunteer teams pledge to provide mentoring and moral support, and each Sentinel pledges to use that support to reach their personal, professional, and financial goals.

Shepherd Center/SHARE Initiative External Link, Opens in New Window

The Shepherd Center is a private, not-for-profit catastrophic care hospital in Atlanta, GA, that specializes in medical treatment for people with traumatic brain injuries (TBIs), spinal cord injuries, chronic pain, and other neuromuscular injuries or illnesses. The SHARE Initiative, a military outreach effort, provides interdisciplinary evaluation and treatment services for active duty servicemembers and Veterans who have experienced these injuries in conflict or stateside.

Sitrin is a health care facility in Upstate New York that is offering adaptive sports, physical rehabilitation and mental health counseling for our returning troops. Sitrin is in the process of standing up a military program that will include post-acute care.

Stable Hands Horses for Heroes External Link, Opens in New Window

Stable Hands Horses for Heroes serves injured and disabled Veterans. Individualized sessions promotion strength, balance, self confidence and reduced pain are provided. Horsemanship skills are taught from the group up. Trained Veteran volunteers assist the certified riding instructors and licensed occupational therapist. Therapy horses are carefully selected and trained. The quiet and picturesque ranch with indoor riding arena and miles of trails offers a welcoming and peaceful environment for Veterans. Stable Hands is a nonprofit 501(c)(3) founded in 1996.

Stay Strong Nation works to create awareness of Soldiers and Veterans suffering from post traumatic stress (PTS) and post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). They are involved in the building of a PTS facility in Maui, Hawaii, that will provide therapy for Veterans with PTS in a relaxed environment and offer recreational activities, such as hiking, biking, horseback riding, whale watching, jet skiing, hang gliding, and sport fishing.

Still Serving Veterans (SSV) is a clearinghouse that optimizes care for wounded warriors and their Families, focused on workforce development, vocational rehabilitation, job placement, Veterans Affairs benefits, and counseling/support services. Since 2007, SSV has helped over 1,200 Veterans reintegrate into new careers and communities. SSV has been declared a "Center of Excellence" by the national Veteran's Coalition Innovation Center and received the national Spirit of Hope Award.

Swords to Plowshares provides a full continuum of care to low-income and homeless Veterans without discriminating on length of service, branch of service or military discharge status. Swords to Plowshares helps Veterans and their Families in the following areas: Frontline Drop-In Center for mental health services, supportive housing, employment support, legal services, and more.

Team River Runner (TRR) gives military Veterans and their Family members an opportunity to find health, healing, and new challenges through whitewater boating and other paddling sports. The benefits of TRR have as much to do with social support, finding emotional strength, and recreating personal identity as they do with athletic activity.

TeamZ is a supportive community of triathletes of all ages and abilities, unbounded by individual goals, training for Sprint to Ironman distance, line chaser to national championship qualifiers. This social organization includes a large number of active and former military personnel and works with all athletes, whether those beginning a triathlon program or those dreaming of crossing the Ironman finish line. TeamZ welcomes wounded warriors.

Therapy Achievements provides out-patient occupational, physical and speech therapy services for people with neurological, orthopedic, or pain conditions. There are programs which address balance and movement, speech and swallowing, swelling from edema and lymphedema, driving rehabilitation, and adaptive technology and seating. Services are provided by therapists with advanced training. Therapy Achievements is dedicated to helping people re-gain access to their community and to maximize their independence.

The U.S. Association of Blind Athletes Military Sport Program enhances the lives of disabled Veterans and disabled servicemembers who are blind and visually impaired by accelerating their rehabilitative process through sport, physical activity, and recreation, and assisting servicemembers in their reintegration to their home communities.

The U.S. Olympic Committee Paralympic Military Program provides post-rehabilitation support and mentoring to American servicemen and women who have sustained physical injuries such as traumatic brain injury, spinal cord injury, amputation, visual impairment/blindness, and stroke. Veterans are introduced to adaptive sport techniques and opportunities through clinics and camps and are also connected with ongoing Paralympic sports programs in their hometowns.
