Environmental Initiatives

Panama possesses extensive tropical forest reserves and a rich biodiversity. The country's natural resources are essential in combating global climate change, providing water resources essential to the Panama Canal, sustaining the livelihoods of indigenous and Afro-Panamanian communities, serving as a home for multiple unique species, and supporting economic activities throughout the country. As part of President Obama’s vision for all U.S. agencies to safeguard the health of our environment by increasing energy efficiency and promoting the use of clean, renewable energy, U.S. Embassy in Panama has developed a three pronged approach.

First, the U.S. Embassy is promoting the need to conserve resources by working with the Government of Panama, non-governmental organizations, and other interested citizens to establish and enforce effective policies and practices that promote the sustainable management of the environment in Panama. Secondly, we are leading by example by going green. We are actively finding ways to promote sustainable environmental management policies on climate change and energy issues, and expanding our own efforts to be responsible stewards of the Earth. Lastly, the U.S. Embassy is encouraging increased public participation in environmental issues by supporting the activities of world-class international organizations and by working with Panamanian citizens and associations.
