Daniel L. Foote

Dan Foote joined the Department of State as a Foreign Service Officer in March 1998 and is now Deputy Chief of Mission at the U.S. Embassy in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic.  Most recently, Dan was Deputy Chief of Mission at the U.S. Embassy in Port au Prince, Haiti.  Prior to that, he directed the Narcotics Affairs Section at the U.S. Embassy Bogotá, one of the largest embassy sections worldwide. His overseas assignments include a year as Team Leader for the interagency Provincial Reconstruction Team in Maysan province, Iraq. Dan also served a tour as a member of the Regional Reconstruction Team in Erbil, Iraq, and was Management Counselor at Embassy Buenos Aires. He held both the Management Officer and Political/Economic Section Chief positions at Embassy Luxembourg, and was posted to Embassy London as General Services Officer. He served as a Vice Consul and General Services Officer at Consulate General Guadalajara, Mexico. In Washington, he worked as a Watch Officer in the State Department’s Operations Center and served in the Bureau of European and Eurasian Affairs as both a Post Management Officer and Assignments Officer.

Dan holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Economics from Columbia University, where he also lettered in football and track and field.  After graduation, he worked for several years as a natural gas trader/broker in the New York City area.  Prior to joining the Department of State, Dan spent two years as a Peace Corps volunteer in rural Bolivia, where he managed extensive development projects.  After returning to the U.S., he taught high school Spanish and coached varsity football and track-and-field events.

Dan is a native of Syracuse, New York, and attended high school in the Buffalo area. He is married to Claudia Valverde Foote of Sucre, Bolivia. They have two children.
