American English Resources Online

Are you interested in learning English or improving the English skills you have? Are you a teacher of English looking for more tools?  You have come to the right place!

The Department of State’s American English website offers students and teachers a wide variety of free resources for teaching and learning English. The new American English website is an unparalleled online resource center for teaching and learning English language and U.S. culture. The site offers teachers and students nearly 1,000 educational resources, in addition to webinars and professional development opportunities for teachers.

English Language Programs at U.S. Embassy Islamabad

The U.S. Embassy in Pakistan also supports a host of English programs across Pakistan to make the study of English more accessible to students and teachers.

The U.S. Embassy has an English Language Officer and staff which organize teacher training workshops, , provide teaching materials and scholarships for professional development classes, and consult with host country education officials throughout Pakistan.

English Access Microscholarship Program

The English Access Microscholarship Program (Access) provides a foundation of English language skills to non-elite, 14 - 18 year old students through afterschool classes and intensive summer learning activities. Access students gain an appreciation for American culture and democratic values, increase their ability to participate successfully in the socio-economic development of their countries, and gain the ability to compete for and participate in future U.S. exchange and study programs.

Since its inception in 2004, over 70,000 students in more than 85 countries have participated in the Access Program. Pakistan has the largest Access program in the world with over 5,000 students in 18 locations across the nation.

English Language Fellows

English Language Fellows are U.S. educators in the field of Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) who participate in 10-month fellowships at academic institutions throughout the world. Examples of EL Fellow projects include: Classroom Teaching, In-Service and Pre-Service Teacher Training, Curriculum Development, Workshop and Seminar Design, Program Evaluation, Needs Assessment, Testing, and English for Specific Purposes (ESP).

Pakistan has had EL Fellows in Islamabad, Lahore, and Karachi.

English Language Specialists

Similar to Fellows, English Language Specialists are U.S. academics and professionals in the field of TESOL. They  conduct professional development  programs that last between two weeks and  four months. Typical assignments may include teacher training, curriculum and textbook development, or host institution program evaluation. In some cases, digital video conferences or webinars are used to supplement training or consultations.

Pakistan has had EL Specialists conduct short-term training throughout the country.

E-Teacher Scholarship Program

The E-Teacher Scholarship Program offers English teaching professionals living outside of the United States the opportunity to take innovative, graduate-level classes online through the University of Maryland, Baltimore County, and the University of Oregon. The courses explore relevant areas of Teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFL).
