U.S.-India Bilateral Trade and Investment

U.S. goods and services trade with India totaled $86 billion in 2011. Exports totaled $33 billion; Imports totaled $53 billion. The U.S. goods and services trade deficit with India was $20 billion in 2011.

India is currently our 13th largest goods trading partner with $57.8 billion in total (two ways) goods trade during 2011. Goods exports totaled $21.6 billion; Goods imports totaled $36.2 billion. The U.S. goods trade deficit with India was $14.5 billion in 2011.

Trade in services with India (exports and imports) totaled $28 billion in 2011 (preliminary data). Services exports were $11.6 billion; Services imports were $16.9 billion. The U.S. services trade deficit with India was $5.3 billion in 2011.

Exports

India was the United States' 17th largest goods export market in 2011.

U.S. goods exports to India in 2011 were $21.6 billion, up 12.4% ($2.4 billion) from 2010, and up 491% from 2000. U.S. exports to India account for 1.5% of overall U.S. exports in 2011.

The top exports categories (2-digit HS) in 2011 were: Precious Stones (diamonds and gold) ($4.6 billion), Machinery ($2.9 billion), Mineral Fuel (oil) ($1.8 billion), Electrical Machinery ($1.5 billion), and Fertilizers ($1.2 billion).

U.S. exports of agricultural products to India totaled $723 million in 2011. Leading categories include: tree nuts ($308 million), fresh fruit ($100 million), cotton ($93 million), and pulses ($42 million).

U.S. exports of private commercial services* (i.e., excluding military and government) to India were $11.6 billion in 2011 (preliminary data), 12% ($1.3 billion) more than 2010, and 351% greater than 2000 level. Other private services (education), and travel categories accounted for most of the U.S. services exports to India.

Imports

India was the United States' 13th largest supplier of goods imports in 2011.

U.S. goods imports from India totaled $36.2 billion in 2011, up 22.5% ($6.6 billion) from 2010, and up 238% from 2000. U.S. imports from India account for 1.6% of overall U.S. imports in 2011.

The five largest import categories in 2011 were: Precious Stones (diamonds) ($8.0 billion), Pharmaceutical Products ($3.2 billion), Mineral Fuel (oil) ($3.2 billion), Organic Chemicals ($2.0 billion), and Woven Apparel ($1.9 billion).

U.S. imports of agricultural products from India totaled $2.7 billion in 2011, the 7th largest supplier of Ag imports. Leading categories include: tree nuts ($319 million), spices ($221 million), essential oils ($139 million), rice ($124 million), and vegetable oils ($113 million).

U.S. imports of private commercial services* (i.e., excluding military and government) were $16.9 billion in 2011 (preliminary data), up 23% ($3.2 billion) from 2010, and up 794% from 2000. The other private services (business, professional, and technical services--computer and data processing services) and the travel categories accounted for nearly all of U.S. services imports from India.

Trade Balance

The U.S. goods trade deficit with India was $14.5 billion in 2011 a 41.4% increase ($4.3 billion) over 2010.

The United States has a services trade deficit of $5.3 billion with India in 2011 (preliminary data), up 58% from 2010.

Investment

U.S. foreign direct investment (FDI) in India was $27.1 billion in 2010 (latest data available), a 29.5% increase from 2009.

U.S. direct investment in India is led by the information, professional, scientific, and technical services, and manufacturing sectors.

India FDI in the United States (stock) was $3.3 billion in 2010 (latest data available), up 40.8% from 2009.

India direct investment in the U.S. is primarily concentrated in the professional, scientific, and technical services sector.

Sales of services in India by majority U.S.-owned affiliates were $13.1 billion in 2009 (latest data available), while sales of services in the United States by majority India-owned firms were $7.2 billion.
