The
Dietary Guidance Working Group
is a group of selected nutrition
professionals from USDA who
oversees the review of Federal
nutrition-related materials, and
ensures consistency with the
Dietary Guidelines for Americans
(DG), the basis for Federal
nutrition policy. Dietary
guidance review of Federal
nutrition-related documents is
important for consistent,
accurate messages so that
Federal government agencies
speak with one voice when it
comes to interpreting the DG.
This review process is intended
as a policy review that allows
for creative interpretation of
healthy eating and physical
activity messages, not as
a peer or editorial review.
Since 1986, the Dietary Guidance
Working Group has reviewed more
than 450 submissions of Federal
material containing dietary
guidance for the general public
produced by USDA and/or U.S.
Department of Health and Human
Services.
Review of draft nutrition
materials by the U.S. Department
of Agriculture Dietary Guidance
Working Group and the U.S.
Department of Health and Human
Services Committee on Dietary
Guidance fulfills the
legislative mandate, the
National Nutrition Monitoring
and Related Research Act (NNMRRA)
of 1990, to ensure that Federal
dietary guidance is consistent
with the Dietary Guidelines
for Americans, and is
scientifically accurate.
