Q. What exactly is a Department of Army "Intern"?
A. Interns in this case are full time, entry level, permanent civilian positions
with the Department of Army. The term "intern" is synonymous with an Army
management training program hired for entry grade levels (GS-5 and GS-7) for
development to mid level management positions (GS-9 or GS-11). Many of today's
Army's senior civilian leaders are former interns. The length of Army's
"internship" is two years and consists of on-the-job training combined with
formal classroom training. At the conclusion of the program, the graduating
intern is prepared for the challenges faced by mid-level managers working with
the Department of Army.

Q. If I apply for this program, do I have to join the military or
the reserves?
A. No. All of Army’s intern positions are Federal Civil Service positions and as
such, have no military obligation.

Q. What exactly is a mobility agreement?
A. A signed mobility agreement is a pre-requisite for employment in the
Department of Army’s intern program. Essentially it is an agreement to protect
both you and the US Army in the event that a position is not available for you
at your initial training site when the two year training program ends. Because
the Department of Army will have invested a significant amount of money in your
training, we do not want to lose your talent. Similarly, since we presume you
will want to continue your employment at the conclusion of your training
program, the agreement assures Army that you will move to a duty location where
they DO have vacancies for your skills. The mobility agreement is simply a
contract that says you will move when Army guarantees your continued employment
at the end of your initial training. Failure to relocate at that time would be
grounds for your separation from Federal service. The mobility requirement is in effect for the length of your training as an ACTEDS Intern.

Q. What education and experience do I need to qualify for this
program?
A. Each individual announcement for our intern positions describes qualification
requirements for that particular position. These qualifications include specific
educational requirements and/or experience requirements.

Q. How do I apply? Do I need a specific application form?
A. There is no standardized form to complete to receive consideration for the
intern program. We accept resumes, the standard Government application form (OF
612 or the SF-171), or any other application form which provides us with your
work history, education and other information which may be required on the
specific vacancy announcement for which you have an interest .
Electronic applications will be accepted, unless stated otherwise in the announcement. All required application materials may
be sent to rock-nccpoc.interns@conus.army.mil?subject=Contact%20Us. For any documents that you are
unable to transmit electronically, you may mail them to the address listed on
the announcement. Remember, however, that ALL items referenced in the section
entitled "How to Apply" must be RECEIVED in this office prior to the closing
date of the announcement or management designated cut-off date. For those who
transmit part of their application by email and part by regular mail, you will
receive a rating of "Ineligible" until the missing material required by the
announcement is received.
The obvious secret to providing yourself the maximum opportunity to be
successful in being hired for any of the intern positions is to precisely follow
the directions included on the specific vacancy announcement for which you have
an interest. If you fail to include any of the items required by the vacancy
announcement, you may not be as competitive as those who DO follow the
directions. Worse yet, by not following directions, it is possible that you
could receive a rating of "Ineligible"!!!

Q. When I submit my application, how will I know if I'm
qualified?
A. You no longer receive written notice of the status of your application.
Instead, this information can now easily be ascertained by visiting our web site
at: http://ncweb.ria.army.mil/aladdin/logins/aladdin1.htm. This web site will
ask you to establish a user ID and a password to protect your privacy. Make sure
you remember your user ID and password so that you can periodically check for
any changes/updates in the status of your applications.

Q. The announcements say I must reactivate my application every
120 days; how do I do it?
A. Your application will be active for a period of 120 days from the date it is
received. If you have not been selected within this timeframe and still wish to
be considered for intern vacancies, E-mail or call the point of contact for that
announcement and tell them that you would like to have your application extended
for an additional 120 days. You may also submit your request through the normal
mail system. Be sure you include the vacancy announcement number for which you
are requesting extension.

Q. How long will it take for my application to be rated?
A. In most cases our web site will tell you the date that we received your
application within one day of its receipt in our office. The same web site will
be updated when your application has been rated. Ratings are entered as early as
possible, but timeframes vary depending on the number of applications we receive
for a given vacancy announcement. In virtually all cases, you will be able to
determine if you have been rated qualified within two weeks of our receipt of
your application.

Q. Some of your vacancies indicate "Worldwide" for the location
of the position. How will I know where the specific vacancies are located?
A. You won’t in most cases. However, on those announcements that do NOT have
a specific duty location listed, there is a geographic preference sheet
attached. When you apply, use that sheet to mark the locations for which you are
interested in living and working. We will only consider you for vacancies in
those locations for which you have indicated a preference. If you decline a
position for which you have indicated a preference, your application will be
inactivated and you will not be considered for any additional intern positions
covered by that vacancy announcement.

Q. Can I send one resume packet for multiple vacancy
announcements?
A. No. Since completely different managers will be reviewing your application
for each different occupation, we must receive a separate resume packet for each
announcement for which you wish consideration. You may, however, send multiple
resumes in one envelope. Please be sure to make clear on each resume the
specific vacancy announcement for which you are applying.
(top)
Q. Do I need to send in "official" copies of my transcripts?
A. "Copies" of your transcripts are sufficient for purposes of making
application for the intern program. Make sure that you have included ALL
transcripts from every school that you have attended and not just the
transcripts from the degree conferring institution. While copies of transcripts
are sufficient when you make application, you may be asked for official
transcripts after you have been selected.
