The Fayetteville, NC VA Medical Center, which serves Veterans in 19 counties in southeastern North Carolina and 2 counties in northeastern South Carolina, is located at 2300 Ramsey Street, Fayetteville, NC, within 10 miles of Fort Bragg and Pope Field.  In addition, Camp Lejeune and Seymour Johnson Air Force Base also lie in the facility’s catchment area.  The Fayetteville VAMC is a general medicine, surgery, and mental health facility.  It is a Complexity Level II facility, authorized 60 general medical, surgical, and mental health beds, and maintains a 69-bed long-term care unit. A 10,000 square foot primary care annex also opened recently in the community, serving an additional 12,000 Veterans. 

The Fayetteville VA Medical Center was recognized by The Joint Commission in September, 2011 as a Top Performer in Key Accountability Measures for heart failure and pneumonia care.  It was one of 405 hospitals nationwide to receive the recognition, and one of only 20 in the Department of Veterans Affairs.

Facility Accomplishments

The medical center's Healthcare for Homeless Veterans Program earned a three-year accreditation from the Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities in March 2012. 

Recognized by The Joint Commission as one of the Top Performers on Key Quality Measures

Strong positive relationships have been developed with the Department of Defense, at Fort Bragg, camp Lejeune and future opportunities at Seymour Johnson AFB in the sharing of patients, staff, educational opportunities and other collaborative efforts.  The Integrated Disability Evaluation System (IDES) program continues to receive favorable reviews.

From August 2011 through March 2012 the Veterans Transporatation Program (VTP) served 4,174 Veterans through 25,364 patient trips, logging more than 117,012 miles. 

The backlog of the Compensation and Pension Program was reduced from 7,000 cases (throughout VISN 6) to fewer than 225; with a reduction in average completion time from more than 200 days to less than 16 days. 

Secured grant funding to train 30+ staff in life coaching and to commence a health and wellness coaching group for our homeless or near-homeless Veterans

Ongoing Initiatives 

The estimated project completion date for the new Wilmington Multi-Specialty Outpatient Clinic is early 2013.  The new facility will expand clinic space from 10,000 square feet to approximately 108,000 square feet.

Construction on the 10,000 square foot Goldsboro Community Based Outpatient Clinic should reach completion by 2013.   This clinic is the first in the Mid-Atlantic Health Care Network built specifically to utilize the Patient Aligned Care Team (PACT) system, a partnership between the Veteran and their health care team for whole-person care.

Approximately 630 employees will be relocated to the new 250,000 square foot Health Care Center, to be located on Raeford Road, Fayetteville, N.C. upon completion in 2015.  The HCC will house nearly all outpatient services, with the center’s current facility on Ramsey Street focusing on in-patient and long-term care, and diagnostic services for inpatients.

The Brunswick County Outreach Clinic opened in August 2011 in Supply, North Carolina.  The clinic sees VA patients four days each week and is manned by two medical care teams   Plans are for other services to be available for Veterans on the fifth day of each week.

The Fayetteville VAMC opened a VA-operated dialysis unit in the Fayetteville community.  The unit has capacity for 64 unique dialysis patients.

OEF/OIF/OND Program

• The Fayetteville VAMC OEF/OIF/OND Case Management Program reaches out to service members returning from Iraq and Afghanistan thrpough contact with military hosptals and other VA medical centers to ensure seamless transition for Veteran's health care.

The program also maintains regular in-person and telephone contact with severely injured Veterans to assure continuity of care in addressing ongoing health care needs.

Women’s Health Care

• The new Women’s Pavilion currently serves nearly 6,000 unique patients (8 percent of all patients) in a separate section of the medical center.  Women Veterans receive comprehensive primary healthcare services, mental health services, preventive healthcare services, as well as gender specific care, such as contraception, mammograms, cytology screening, menopausal, and other gynecological services. Maternity services and other specialty services not available at the facility are purchased through community providers.

•• • Women’s healthcare is also provided at the Community Based Outpatient Clinics.   Comprehensive primary care accommodates the unique needs of women Veterans.

Educational Affiliations
• The Fayetteville VAMC is affiliated with  University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill School Department of Ophthalmology, East Carolina University, Duke University, Southern Regional Area Health Education Center and the United States Army at Fort Bragg. 

The medical center has its own Dental Residency Program and a Pharmacy Residency Program.

• Additional clinical and educational affiliations exist with 115 programs and 67 colleges, universities and schools in many fields, including a wide array of university programs and professional schools in the fields of audiology, dentistry, healthcare administration, nursing, nurse anesthesia, occupational and physical therapy, ophthalmology, physician assistant, pharmacy, psychology, speech pathology, and social work. 

 
• The Fayetteville VAMC has an Affiliation Agreement with the Cumberland County Health Occupations Program which includes four high schools.  Professional and high school students complete clinical affiliations at the Fayetteville VAMC as work-without-compensation (WOC) trainees.  

HUD/VASH Program
The facility has 135 vouchers designated for the Fayetteville/Wilmington area, and screened 723 Veterans, with 208 gaining admission to the program.  Currently 112 Veterans and 95 family members are being housed, and 127 vouchers are in use.

Compensation and Pension (C&P) Exam Program

Approximately 500 C&P Exam requests are processed per month, an increase due in part to the Agent Orange presumptive initiative.  However, processing time has decreased  significantly to an average of less than 16 days, well below the national average.
