VA’s Mid-Atlantic Health Care Network opened two state-of-the-art dialysis clinics as part of the ongoing effort to increase VA’s internal capacity to provide hemodialysis treatment to chronic dialysis patients. A 16-chair clinic which can treat up to 64 patients will open June 1, at 2301 Robeson Street, Fayetteville. A 12-chair clinic which can treat up to 48 patients will open June 6, at 8081 Arco Corporate Drive in Raleigh.
VA is opening these clinics in an effort to meet the growing needs of Veterans in North Carolina and to advance VA’s efforts to establish best practices in dialysis care for the Veteran population. This effort is focused on providing outpatient chronic dialysis care to ambulatory Veterans who live in close proximity to the new clinics.
“Increasing internal capacity to provide outpatient ambulatory chronic dialysis care will allow more Veterans treatment in a comprehensive care environment integrated with the other care they receive from VA,” said Network Director Daniel F. Hoffmann. This effort ties directly into the new Patient Aligned Care Team approach, and will allow for consistent and integrated oversight of medical records which provides the Veteran’s entire health care team the ability to maintain continuous comprehensive awareness of each Veteran’s treatment and status.”
Currently, almost 600 Veterans receive dialysis in North Carolina, with nearly 75 percent receiving dialysis by contract facilities. Because dialysis typically requires three four-hour treatments each week, drive time is a factor for transitioning patients to the new clinics. The Network will transition 100 Veterans who live within 30 minutes of the new clinics from contract care to VA provided care.
