Spinal Cord Injury and Disorders (SCI/D)

The mission of the SCI/D program is to promote the health, independence, quality of life, and productivity of individuals with spinal cord injury and disorders throughout their entire lives.

The VA SCI/D System of Care provides an integrated and coordinated lifelong continuum of services that addresses the needs of Veterans with SCI/D. These services include rehabilitation, ongoing medical and surgical care, primary and preventive care, specialty care, home care, and long term care. Comprehensive services include patient and family education, psychological, social, and vocational services, recreation therapy, and the provision of medical supplies and equipment.

Spinal Cord Injury/Disorders Services is dedicated to the lifelong care of Veterans with a spinal cord injury or disorder. The care is provided through an integrated network of care that gives Veterans the convenience of access to a local Spinal Cord Injury Primary Care Team in VA Medical Centers close to their home, and to the full range of interdisciplinary SCI primary and specialty care at one of 24 spinal cord injury centers throughout the country.
