USADF began programming in Zimbabwe in 2010

Focus: Improving incomes among the most marginalized populations by investing in agriculture, agro-processing, and livelihood activities.

Marginalized: Approximately half of USADF’s grant portfolio focuses on helping Zimbabweans living with disabilities to increase incomes and improve household food security. Other grants focus on women, the elderly, and those living in remote, drought-prone areas.

Food Security: Over the past decade, Zimbabwe has gone from a net food exporter to a major recipient of food aid. USADF is helping smallholder farmers increase food production by providing drip irrigation systems to community based groups so they can grow fruits, vegetables and staple crops for sale and consumption.

In the drought-prone South, USADF is pioneering the use of sand abstraction technology to pump water from dry river beds to irrigate large fields of otherwise arid land. Other grants focus on improving the value chains for maize and soya by investing in both farmers and processors of these staple foods.
