Professional Development

Employees at the NIH are accountable for ensuring that their assigned duties and responsibilities are fulfilled and fully-successful, while maintaining focus on the organization’s vision, mission and goals. Additionally, employees are responsible for advocating for their own professional development opportunities and improving their non-technical and technical competencies.

Professional development opportunities may include training, reading/studying, being coached/mentored, shadowing, participating in a committee, and developing SOPs. Competencies help employees strive for excellence. They are used to identify the major characteristics the organization needs in its employees to accomplish its mission. Employees should discuss with their supervisors which competencies they should focus on strengthening; then come to agreement on how this will be accomplished through training and other developmental activities.

The near right column lists NIH Training Center programs, services and courses of interest to anyone seeking professional development opportunities.
