On March 23, 2011 the Fiscal Year (FY) 2012 Congressional Budget Justification for Foreign Operations was submitted by President Obama to Congress, Approximately $8.7 billion was designated for core global health programs including maternal and child health, family planning, HIV/AIDS and other infectious diseases. The request for Neglected Tropical Diseases was for $100 million. In December 2011 the U.S. Congress allocated $89 million for USAID's NTD control efforts in FY12, which is a $12 million increase over the FY11 budget for NTDs.
This brings the appropriated amount for the six-year neglected tropical diseases control and elimination programs, which began in Fiscal Year 2006, to a total of $301 million.
