Welcome to Los Angeles Air Force Base home of the Space and Missile Systems Center - the Air Force's space acquisition center of excellence. LAAFB is the home of the 61st Air Base Group. Other tenant units include AFOSI Detachment 810 and the 369th Recruiting Squadron. It is the only active duty base in the Los Angeles area.

The Space and Missile Systems Center at Los Angeles Air Force Base, located in El Segundo, plays a major role in the local region. SMC has an annual budget of approximately  $8 billion and an annual payroll of more than $635 million - much of which is spent in the local economy. The local economic impact is approximately $1.8 billion annually.

Your assignment at Los Angeles AFB provides the opportunity to work in the exciting field of space technology. The Space and Missile Systems Center is Air Force Space Command's "Center of Excellence" for the development and acquisition of space-based support to our operational fighting forces.

Local Area

In addition to a great place to work, Los Angeles and surrounding communities offer beautiful housing areas and a wide variety of choices for education and entertainment. Add to that the mild climate and scenic ocean views, and you have the formula for a wonderful assignment.

The local area offers many unique cultural activities such as summer concerts at the Hollywood Bowl, a number of world-class museums and the opportunity to attend TV show tapings. Disneyland, Universal Studios, Knott's Berry Farm and Magic Mountain are all located within an hour's drive of the base. The mild climate makes it possible to enjoy a number of outdoor sports, such as golfing, fishing, boating and surfing year-round. Within a couple hours drive you can be at the beach, desert or mountains. It's possible to surf and snow ski on the same day.
