I'm always happy to help Mainers who are encountering difficulties with our federal agencies. My offices can act as a liaison between the citizens of Maine and the federal government. It is important to know that neither I, nor my staff, can approve a claim or appeal, or compel any agency to act in your favor. Those types of decisions by law are made by the federal agency involved based on the facts of the case. However, I am glad to obtain answers to your questions, to make the appropriate officials aware of your concerns, and to cut through "red tape" you might be experiencing.
To help you with any problems involving a federal office, I will need you to submit a written and signed request for assistance which will allow a federal agency to share information with me from your file. This is due to the Privacy Act of 1974, which is designed to protect the individual rights of citizens by prohibiting the release of personal information about them to unauthorized parties.
Please address your request to Senator King and state that you give me permission to look into your concern. Your request can be made in the form of a letter and should contain your full name; mailing address; telephone number(s); Social Security number, file number or case number; signature of the person involved; and finally, all relevant details of the case. It should be as specific as possible and indicate your desired outcome. Also, please include copies of any pertinent documentation.
If you are not a resident of Maine, I encourage you to contact your United States Senators. It is a longstanding congressional courtesy that each elected official be allowed to assist his or her own constituents. Your Senators will also know the additional resources that may be available to you in your home state.
If your problem involves the state of Maine or one of its agencies, you may want to contact the Governor's office or your representatives to the Maine State Legislature.

Youth Program
The United States Senate Youth Program is an opportunity for high school juniors and seniors to attend a weeklong educational program in Washington, D.C. as well as receive a one-time $5,000 college scholarship.
Qualified students must hold student body office or another elected or appointed position in their communities and show academic interest and aptitude in government, history and politics. The chief state school officer in each state makes the final selection of delegates by December 1. The program is merit-based, highly competitive and the chosen delegates are consistently outstanding.

Since 1802, many of America's finest students have competed to enroll as cadets or midshipmen at the nation's five prestigious United States service academies. Students interested in one of the five academies should contact Senator King in the spring or summer of their junior year in high school, and no later than the fall of their senior year. Applicants must be at least 17 and no more than 22 years old as of July 1 of the year of admission to a service academy. Interested young men and women from throughout Maine can contact any of Senator King's offices for more information about service appointments.
