What is the IRC?

The Information Resource Center (IRC) is a cultural and information resource center located at the U.S. Embassy in Algiers. Its mission is to provide authoritative, up-to-date information to the Algerian audience on U.S. policy, and to promote public awareness, and facilitate mutual understanding of political, economic, trade, cultural and environmental issues.

What is available at the IRC?

Visitors to the IRC have access to over 3000 fiction and non-fiction books, including specialized reference publications, encyclopedias, and directories. The IRC also provides access to electronic books, journals, magazines, and newspapers. All IRC visitors have access to computer stations with free internet access. The IRC also periodically hosts special events such as speakers, book discussions, movies, and English language conversation groups.

Where is the IRC?

The IRC is located at the U.S. Embassy Algiers, at 04 Chemin Bachir El Ibrahimi in El Biar.

When is the IRC open?

The IRC is open Sunday–Wednesday from 09:00-15:00. The IRC is closed on local and American holidays.

How can I visit?

At least 48 hours before you would like to visit, send an email to AlgiersIRC@state.gov with your name and the date of your planned visit. You can also call the IRC at 0770 08 2108. A government-issued ID is required for entry. IRC members do not need to give advance notice before visiting the IRC but do still need to bring a government-issued ID for entry.

How much does it cost to become a member?

Membership is free!

Am I able to borrow books and other materials from the IRC?

IRC members may borrow books for a period of two weeks.

How can I become an IRC member?

Membership is open to anyone 18 and over. Membership applications may be filled out at the IRC when you visit. Please bring 2 small ID-size photos, a certificate of residency, and a stamped copy of an official ID card (national ID card, driver’s license, or passport). It will take one week to process your application. The term of membership is two years. Members in good standing may renew their membership at the end of the membership term.
