The Political Section covers diplomatic and foreign relations, Japanese politics, political-military issues, and labor affairs as well as bilateral cooperation with Japan on a full agenda of international issues. Utilizing an extensive network of Japanese contacts , the section advocates and explains U.S. policy positions, ensures that U.S. policy is effectively implemented, protects U.S. interests, anticipates new policy requirements, and keeps U.S. decision-makers informed through timely reporting.

The Consul General in Sapporo assists in the promotion of U.S. foreign relations and interests in the northern areas of Japan. The areas covered, Hokkaido, Aomori, Akita, Iwate, and Miyagi prefectures, are vital parts of Japan's political and economic infrastructure and there are considerable U.S. interests in the region. The Consul General provides the vibrant regions of Hokkaido and Tohoku with a link to U.S. political, economic, agricultural, environmental, scientific and technological resources.

In addition, our Consulate in Sapporo serves as the northern liaison for mutual security policy coordination between the U.S. Military and Japan's Self Defense Forces.
