Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) and Newsletter Signup
The State Department launched the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) (formerly known as "Travel Registration" or "Registration with Embassies") to receive the latest travel updates and information. The travel and contact information you enter into our Smart Travel Enrollment Program will make it easier for consular officers in U.S. embassies and consulates around the world to contact you and your loved ones during an emergency, including situations where your family or friends in the U.S. are having problems trying to contact you with important news.

Get the monthly American Citizen Services Newsletter
The U.S. Embassy in Tokyo produces a free monthly e-mail newsletter, in addition to public announcements on safety and security issues in Japan. (This service was previously known as the "warden system"). You automatically get the newsletter and other important communications from the Embassy when you sign up for the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP).
