Subject: Earthquake near Lorca, Spain May 11, 2011
 
The U.S. Embassy in Madrid advises U.S. citizens to avoid the area affected by two earthquakes that struck the Murcia Region on May 11, 2011. Spanish authorities are responding to the crisis and reporting damage to buildings and other infrastructure in and near the cities of Lorca and Totana in southeastern Spain.
 
If you would like to report a loved one missing or injured in the area please call the Spanish toll-free number 900-12-1212.  You may also call the U.S. Embassy at (34) 91-587-2240 between 08:30 – 17:30 Madrid time or after hours at (34) 91-587-2220.  You may email us at askacs@state.gov.
 
For the latest security information, U.S. citizens living and traveling abroad should regularly monitor the Department’s Bureau of Consular Affairs website, where the current Worldwide Caution, Travel Alerts, Travel Warnings, and health-information resources can be found.  Up-to-date information on security can also be obtained by calling 1-888-407-4747 toll free in the U.S. and Canada or, for callers in other areas by calling a regular toll line at 1-202-501-4444.  These numbers are available from 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. Eastern Time, Monday through Friday (except U.S. federal holidays.)
 
We encourage U.S. citizens living or traveling abroad to enroll in the Department of State’s Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP).  By enrolling, U.S. citizens make it easier for the U.S. Embassy or Consulate to contact them in case of emergency.  U.S. citizens without Internet access may register directly with the appropriate U.S. Embassy or Consulate.
