The US Embassy can acknowledge the signature on an affidavit or power of attorney and only if the individual appears in person, signs the document in the presence of a consular officer, provides positive proof of identity, and takes an oath. There is a fifty dollar ($50) fee PER notarial seal (accepted cash only). Each additional seal provided for the same transaction is $50.

If a document being notarized requires additional witnesses, it is the responsibility of the individual to provide them at the time of the appointment. Consular staff cannot serve as a witness for any item that will be notarized.

The bodies endorsing with an apostille in Georgia are as follows:

  • Civil Registry Agency of the Ministry of Justice
  • Ministry of Education and Sciences
  • Ministry of Labor, Health and Social Affairs
  • Supreme Court

Authenticating Documents Issued in the USA

The US Embassy CANNOT, by law, under any circumstances, authenticate a document issued in the United States. This includes birth certificates, marriage licenses, divorce decrees, educational records, driver's licenses and etc., regardless of whether the documents have already been notarized in the United States. Under the Hague Convention on Legalization of Foreign Public Documents, an “Apostille” by a U.S. clerk of court of a State Secretary or State certifies authenticity of a U.S. document. Information on how to obtain a Hague apostille on public documents issued in the United States is available by clicking here.
