Ambassador Villarosa Presents Credentials
The new U.S. Ambassador to Mauritius, Shari Villarosa, presented her credentials to the President of the Republic of Mauritius, Kailash Purryag on Monday, November 5. Ambassador Villarosa also called on Prime Minister Ramgoolam and other senior ministers on the day.

4th Daniel Pearl World Music Days
American Hip Hop artists ‘Epiphany’ and ‘Ferocious’ were in Mauritius for the Daniel Pearl World Music Days. During their ten-day stay in Mauritius, both artists engaged in a variety of activities, including live radio shows, meetings with Mauritian youth in schools and NGOs and workshops with local artists.

Women Empowerment Celebrated
Charge d'Affaires Troy Fitrell hosted a reception in honor of the African Women Entrepreneurship Program (AWEP) and Political Training for Women participants. The event was held to celebrate women empowerment in Mauritius.

Waste Management Cooperation
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and Embassy Port Louis collaborated with the Ministries of Environment and Local Government of Mauritius for the “Coastal East Africa Solid Waste Management Workshop” from 10-13 September. Delegates from several countries attended.

Counterfeit Pharmaceuticals Workshop
A workshop entitled "Campaign against Counterfeit Pharmaceuticals" was launched by Charge d'Affaires Troy Fitrell and Mauritian Health Minister Lormus Bundhoo on August 29. The workshop was conducted by Mr. Abraham Lugo, Regional Immigration and Customs Enforcement Attaché, U.S. Embassy, Pretoria.

Media Speaker Program
U.S. Journalist Elizabeth Bryant was in Mauritius from August 18 to 22 and conducted a workshop on "Media Best Practices" with about 40 journalists and media students. Charge d'Affaires Troy Fitrell inaugurated the workshop. Ms. Bryant also gave a lecture at UoM and met with local colleagues.

Donation to the University of Mauritius
The U.S. Embassy donated a collection of books on gender to the University of Mauritius (UOM). The collection covers subject like women in politics, violence against women and women in science. The donation was made by Chargé d'Affaires Troy Fitrell, in presence of UOM Vice-Chancellor Rughooputh.

Political Training for Women
The U.S. Embassy partnered with the Ministry of Gender Equality to deliver training for about 200 Mauritian women interested in becoming politically active. The political campaign training took place over two days and brought together women from all corners of Mauritius.

Pre-Departure Orientation
Twenty Mauritian students who are to begin college in the U.S. attended a pre-departure orientation briefing at Macarty House yesterday. They were wished well by Charge d'Affaires Troy Fitrell and got advice from several Embassy staff and U.S. university alumni.

236th Anniversary of U.S. Independence
Charge d'Affaires Troy Fitrell and Mrs. Fitrell hosted numerous guests for the occasion, including the Acting President of the Republic, Mrs. Monique Ohsan-Bellepeau, the Prime Minister Dr. Navin Ramgoolam, the Deputy Prime Minister, Dr. Rashid Beebeejaun and other guests.

DIILS Seminar
A team of the U.S. Defense Institute of International Legal Studies (DIILS) was in Mauritius last week to train 29 officers in maritime operational law, security and enforcement. CDA Fitrell presented certificates to participants at the closing of the seminar.

PAO Harper in Rodrigues
Public Affairs Officer (PAO) Vanessa Harper was in Rodrigues for a series of meetings and events, including educational advising sessions and the Spelling Bee competition. PAO Harper also met regional authorities and visited U.S.- funded projects.

Opening of "Elles-Coop"
CDA Fitrell was present at the launch of the "Elles Coop" women sales outlet in Port Louis. The U.S. Embassy participated in the purchase of equipment for this outlet to the tune of Rs 100 000. Ministers Seetaram and Martin as well as Embassy officials visited the shop which will enhance member market visibility.

Mauritian at YAL Summit in the U.S.
Kurreem Rossaye, a young Mauritian techno-preneur is heading off to represent Mauritius at the Young African Leaders (YAL) Innovation Summit in the U.S. from June 12 to 30. His participation was announced during a press conference at the Board of Investment.

Workshop on Children in the Criminal Justice System
Three experts from the U.S. Department of Justice and the FBI are conducting a workshop entitled “Children as Victims and Witnesses in the Criminal Justice System”. The workshop is targeting professionals from various sectors that deal with children before, during and after they enter court.

AWEP Mauritius Chapter
The Chapter of the African Women Entrepreneur Program (AWEP) has been created by Nivedita Nathoo, former AWEP participant. The announcement was made at a press conference in presence of U.S. Embassy Charge d'Affaires Troy Fitrell and other Embassy officials. AWEP was launched at the 2010 AGOA Forum.

Visit of Ambassador Anthony Holmes
AMB Anthony Holmes, Deputy to the Commander for Civil-Military Activities (DCMA) of AFRICOM, visited Mauritius from May 7-8. He met with Prime Minister Ramgoolam, the Minister of Foreign Affairs during his visit. He participated in a media roundtable and was guest of honor at a reception hosted by CDA Fitrell.

Joint U.S.-EU Media Workshop
A workshop under the theme of "Media Rights & Responsibilities" was organized by the U.S. Embassy and the EU Delegation to mark World Press Freedom Day. The workshop gathered some 40 participants, including journalists and media students, and featured speakers from the U.S. and Mauritius.

Earth Day
The U.S. Embassy partnered with the Beach Authority and the National Parks and Conservation Service for this event. CDA Fitrell and Embassy staff participated in planting an endemic garden and other activities to promote the need to respect and help preserve the Earth.

Jazz Appreciation Month 2012
JAM was marked this year by showcasing Mauritian amateur jazz players, to illustrate how jazz has spread beyond the U.S. and inspired millions of musicians across the world. Mo'zar Boys Jazz Band, Mo'zar Girls Blues Jazz Band, Stephan Hippolyte, Mike Lapierre & Band performed on this occasion.

Commemoration of Women's History Month
The Embassy in collaboration with the Ministry of Cooperatives and the Ministry of Health organized a Women's Fair in Curepipe (center), where women entrepreneurs were able to sell their products. Free medical tests were also carried out.

PAO at Mauritius National Day in School
Public Affairs Officer (PAO) Vanessa Harper was guest of honor for the Mauritius National Day celebration at Mahatma Gandhi Secondary School (MGSS) in Nouvelle France today. PAO Harper read the Prime Minister's message at the school. The U.S. Embassy also donated some books to MGSS.

U.S. donates Rs 1.12 million to NGOs
USD 40 000 (approximately Rs 1 120 000) was disbursed to 6 NGOs in Mauritius and 1 in Rodrigues, under the Ambassador’s Self Help Fund. The agreements for the projects were signed between CDA Troy Fitrell and beneficiaries of the program.

"Barack Obama and the paradox of race"
A digital video conference (DVC) entitled "Barack Obama and the Paradox of Race in the U.S." took place at the University of Mauritius on February 15. CDA Fitrell, PAO Harper and several students participated in the DVC, conducted by U.S. speaker Andrew J.Diamond.
