Alfred R. Magleby arrived in Okinawa as U.S. Consul General in August, 2012.  He came from the U.S. Naval War College in Newport, Rhode Island, where he served as faculty advisor and professor in the Strategy and Policy Department.

Mr. Magleby has a long history of working to strengthen U.S.-Japan relations – as a volunteer missionary, during graduate studies at the University of Tokyo, and in political circles at the Japanese National Diet.  In addition to six years living in Japan in these various capacities, he worked with Japanese businesses in Hawaii, California, and Ohio for some years before joining the U.S. Department of State in 1991.

Since entering the Foreign Service, Mr. Magleby served two tours of duty in the U.S. Embassy in Tokyo – as the Executive Assistant to the Ambassador from 1995-97 and as a Political Officer from 1997-99.  His return to Japan as Consul General follows 12 years’ experience with sensitive national security and other political issues in American embassies in Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Iraq, and the United Arab Emirates.

Mr. Magleby graduated in Political Science from Brigham Young University and earned a Masters Degree in Strategic Studies from the U.S. Naval War College.  He returns to Japan with his wife, Hiromi; they have four adult children in the United States.  He enjoys reading and languages, particularly Japanese and Arabic.
