February 9 – China expert and former U.S. Official Paul Haenle, Director of the Carnegie-Tsinghua Center for Global Policy, a joint U.S.-China research center, spoke to an audience of 60 journalists, local business leaders, political leaders, and students.  Mr. Haenle emphasized that the US- Japan Alliance is the most important alliance in the region.  He also observed that US policy towards China is the same as Japan’s policy towards China: both the US and Japan want to engage China and have China play a larger role in the region.  Mr. Haenle also reassured the audience of the United States’ strong commitment to the US-Japan Security Alliance.
