TITLE OF CLERKSHIP: HEMATOLOGY/MEDICAL ONCOLOGY
DEPARTMENT: Medicine
NUMBER OF STUDENTS ROTATING ON SERVE AT ONCE: (1-Hem 1 Onc) LENGTH OF ROTATIONS: 3-8 weeks
WILL TAKE STUDENTS FOR TWO WEEKS ONLY: Yes
Type/LEVEL OF STUDENTS ACCEPTED: 4th year
TIME OF YEAR OFFERED: Flexible start dates (Not offered to civilian students June - September)

OBJECTIVES/DESCRIPTION OF CLERKSHIP:
There is a capacity to have one clerk each on the Hematology and Medical Oncology Services. On either service the clerk will participate in consultative inpatient rounds and see outpatients two afternoons per week. There is ample staff available to allow one-on-one discussions with the clerk regarding patient management problems. Three didactic sessions per week, one devoted exclusively toward developing skills in evaluation of peripheral blood smears and bone marrow, provide a broad exposure to a wide variety of hematologic or oncologic problems. The Hematology rotation will emphasize common problems in benign and malignant hematology; the Oncology rotation will emphasize presentation, evaluation and treatment of common tumors. Clerks can expect to work about 50 hours per week on either of these rotations. They can also expect to prepare short presentations of topics pertinent to patients whom they evaluate. It is recommended that clerks take these rotations after first having and completing their inpatient Internal Medicine rotation.
