The American Reference Center specializes in providing current information on U.S. foreign policy, European-U.S. relations, domestic politics, the environment, and economy.

Resources

The ARC holdings include a small reference book collection and a magazine section. Visitors are welcome to research the EbscoHost magazine database, which contains abstracts and articles of U.S. periodicals.

The ARC accepts requests e.g. for biographical information, texts of speeches by U.S. government officials, articles from U.S. magazines and newspapers, addresses of American organizations, URLs, or reports from American think tanks and research institutes.

The resources of the ARC are accessible - by appointment- to Austrian government institutions, the media, scholars and others with a serious research interest in the United States. In order to use the facilities at the American Reference Center clients are asked to make an appointment by calling (01) 405 30 33.

Center staff will also respond to inquiries by letter, fax, telephone and e-mail to the address given above.

The ARC does not answer queries about visas to the United States or about other consular matters. For consular information, please check the Consular pages of our website.

School Outreach Program

The U.S. Embassy introduced this program to give teachers and students the possibility to meet and talk to diplomats of the U.S. Embassy or the U.S. Missions to the OSCE and United Nations in Vienna.

Visits may be structured to meet curriculum needs, and the discussions are generally conducted in English. The speakers present a short overview of a particular subject relating to American society - e.g. popular culture, the educational system, domestic politics, daily life - as well as issues pertaining to international affairs, or talk more generally about their lives (their jobs, the schools and universities they attended, their hometowns) and then open the floor to discussion and questions.

If you would be interested in taking advantage of this opportunity, please contact the American Reference Center (arc@usembassy.at) for more information and to make arrangements. If possible, we would like to know if there are particular topics your class would like to discuss.
Please see this information sheet to find out about available presentations.
