COL MILDRED CLARK

COL MILDRED CLARK

The Clinic was dedicated to COL Mildred Irene Clark, a North Carolina native, on July 27, 1999. COL Clark received her Army Nurse Corps commission in March 1938. Her overseas assignments included service in Hawaii, Korea and Japan. In 1956, she wrote The Prayer of an Army Nurse, which hallmarks the patient-focused service of Army Nursing. She presided over the Nurses Corps during the massive buildup for the Vietnam War and instituted a number of policies to increase recruitment. Under her tenure as Chief, male nurses received commissions in the Regular Army and she was influential in securing general officer rank for the Chief of the Nurses Corps. After completing her term as Chief of Army Nurses Corps, she served as special Assistant to the Director, Personnel and Training for Nursing Activities, Office of the Surgeon General from September 1, 1967 until her retirement on October 11, 1967. She received the Distinguished Service Medal and the Army Commendation with Oak Leaf Cluster among her many awards and honors.
