U.S. Exchange Program Alumna of the Month

U.S. Exchange Program Alumna of the Month

Librarian and Alumna of the Month Yvonne Murphy

Over the last 60 years, thousands of UK citizens have traveled to the United States on exchange programs sponsored by the American Embassy in London.  Each month we will highlight alumni of these programs.

This August’s Alumna of the Month is Yvonne Murphy, who managed Northern Ireland’s most important collection of political materials at the Linen Hall Library in Belfast.  Yvonne traveled to the U.S. on the International Visitor Leadership Program in 1997 to participate in an American Studies exchange.  Watch Yvonne discuss her exchange experience and an exhibition she helped develop entitled “Troubled Images,” which toured the U.S. in 2004 and was visited in Northern Ireland by former President Bill Clinton (Windows Media video).

From now until September 11th, 2010, the same exhibition that toured the United States will be on display at Linen Hall Library in Belfast.  The exhibition, “Troubled Images: Posters and Images of the Northern Ireland Conflict,”  features 70 posters on display that illustrate collective experiences in Northern Ireland since the beginning of the Troubles, and reflect all sides of the conflict.
