Application Process

The electronic visa application form, DS-160, is available at https://ceac.state.gov/genniv/. Please remember to save your work frequently.

Applicants are also requested to upload their photo. Please read carefully the requirements to upload your photo prior to completing your application. Should you still have problems capturing your photo, please bring a recent 2” x 2” photo of you taken on a white background when you come to the Embassy.

After completing the electronic form, please request an appointment online via https://evisaforms.state.gov/default.asp?postcode=PTL&appcode=3.

Visa applicants located in Seychelles or Reunion Island who are under 14 years of age or older than 79 years of age are not required to interview in person.  Please contact the Embassy at PTLConsular@state.gov to confirm if you or your child qualifies for the interview waiver.  The online application form DS-160 must still be completed and you will need to make arrangements to pay the equivalent in Mauritian Rupees of $160.00 at the Mauritius Commercial Bank located on Sir William Newton Street (first floor), Port Louis, Mauritius.  After review of the application, it is possible that an in-person interview be required.

Visa regulations require applicants in the Port Louis Consular District, which includes Reunion and Seychelles, to apply in person at the U.S. Embassy in Port Louis. Visas are generally delivered within the next 72 hours. Successful applicants will be instructed to visit the TNT Courier desk located on the ground floor of the same building that houses the Embassy to set up delivery. Applicants should be prepared to provide a delivery address, telephone number, and pay a delivery fee of MUR115 inclusive of VAT. Applicants from Reunion, Seychelles and other islands should plan for extra days in Mauritius.

The following documents are required when you come to the Embassy on the appointment date booked online:

  • Passport: Current and previous passports issued in the past ten years. Travelers are required to be in possession of passports valid for at least six months beyond their intended stay in the U.S.
  • DS-160 Confirmation page: A confirmation page with limited biographical information and a barcode will be provided once the DS-160 form is completed and transmitted electronically. Please bring this confirmation page with you to the interview.

A non-refundable application fee in rupees of the equivalent of USD 160 only must be paid per applicant at the Main Branch of Mauritius Commercial Bank Sir William Newton Street in Port Louis, prior to submitting the visa application. One of the counters on the first floor of the bank is dedicated to accepting payment from visa applicants. The bank may require you to present a valid passport at the time of payment. Please bring both copies of the bank receipt at the Embassy when you apply.

B1/B2 applicants must also submit:

  • Proof of employment
  • Purpose of trip to the United States
  • Planned itinerary or schedule in the U.S
  • Proof of financial support
  • Valid work/residency permit (if applicable)
  • Evidence of marital status (if applicable)

Student Visa (F, M) or Exchange Visitor (J) applicants must also submit:

  • I-20: F1 and M1 students must include the original SEVIS I-20 form. Family members seeking F2 and M2 status need their own I-20 form.
  • DS-2019: J1 applicants must include the original SEVIS DS-2019 form. Family members seeking J2 status must submit their own DS-2019 form.
  • DS-7002: J1 applicants under "trainee" or "intern" categories will be required to submit a fully completed and signed Form DS-7002 from the program sponsor if Form DS-2019 was issued after July 19 2007.
  • I-901 Fee Confirmation: Students and Exchange Visitors visa applicants need to pay the SEVIS fee before applying for visas. For information on the SEVIS fee, please visit http://www.fmjfee.com Please note: Students/Exchange Visitors also need to pay the visa application fee.
  • Proof of Funds to Cover all Expenses: This could include bank statements or pay receipts. If you are applying for an F1 visa and planning to study for more than one year, bring proof of funds to cover the first year's expenses.

OPT applicants must also submit: If you are applying for Optional Practical Training (OPT) you should also bring the original Employment Authorization card together with your endorsed I-20 form.

Dependents: Submit a copy of the principal applicant's I-20 or DS-2019, together with a copy of the principal applicant's visa and birth or marriage records showing relation to principal applicant, if applying separately.

Temporary Work Visa (H, L), Athletes and Artists Visa (O, P), International Cultural Exchange (Q) or Religious Worker Visa (R) applicants must also submit:

  • Original or copy of I-797 Approval Notice
  • Photocopy of I-129 Petition (if applicable)
  • Proof of employment: Letter of job offer/contract and most recent pay statement from U.S. Company

Dependents: Submit a copy of the I-797, together with a copy of the principal applicant’s visa and birth or marriage records showing relationship to the principal applicant, if applying separately.

Transit Visa (C1) and Crew Visa (D) must also submit:

  • Contract with the Shipping/Airline Company
  • Detailed Travel Plan

The Embassy reserves the right to perform background checks related to a visa application.

Visa Fee Increase

  • Fees that will increase (only nonimmigrant fees) 

    If you paid your visa fee before April 13, 2012, you do not have to pay the difference between the new and old fee amounts as long as your visa interview is on or before July 12, 2012. Starting July 13, 2012, you will be required to pay the difference between the old and new fee amounts.
