Todd Chapman, Deputy Chief of Mission

Todd C. Chapman is the Deputy Chief of Mission at the U.S. Embassy in Brasilia.  He recently completed a one-year tour as the Senior Deputy Coordinator for Development and Economic Affairs at the U.S. Embassy in Kabul, Afghanistan administering over $4 billion in foreign assistance.  He was Chargé d'Affaires at the U.S. Embassy in Maputo, Mozambique from 2007-2010.  His area of concentration in the diplomatic service is economic affairs.

Other previous foreign postings include Political/Economic Counselor in La Paz, Bolivia (2004-2006); Economic Officer, San Jose, Costa Rica (2001-2004), Energy Officer, Abuja, Nigeria (1997-1999); Economic/Commercial Officer, Maputo, Mozambique (1993-1995); Consular Officer, Taipei, Taiwan (1991-1993); and several assignments in Washington D.C.   Todd joined the State Department in 1990 and is a member of the Senior Foreign Service.

Originally from Houston, Texas, Todd spent his secondary school years in Sao Paulo, Brazil, first moving to Sao Paulo in 1974.  He received his undergraduate degree from Duke University and a master's degree from the Joint Military Intelligence College.   He speaks Portuguese and Spanish and previously worked in New York and Saudi Arabia as a commercial banker.  He is married to Janetta Chapman and they have two sons, Joshua and Jason, studying at Wheaton College outside Chicago, Illinois.
