John Tavenner is the Consul General at the US Consulate General in Hermosillo, Sonora, Mexico.  He arrived at post on August 31, 2011. 

Before assuming his current position, he was the Deputy Consul General and Visa Chief from 2009-2011 in Bogota, Colombia, one of the largest visa processing posts in the world.  From 2006-2009 he was a Regional Consular Officer (RCO) in Frankfurt, Germany, covering 14 posts located primarily in West Africa.  He has also served in Guadalajara, Mexico (Non-Immigrant Visa Chief from 2004-06 and American Citizens Services Chief from 2002-04), the Bureau of Consular Affairs in Washington DC (2000-02), Athens, Greece (Chief of the Passport Unit, 1997-2000), Tegucigalpa (Econ/Consular rotation, 1994-96) and Mexico City (Consular Officer, 1992-94). 

John was born in Costa Rica and raised in Lubbock, Texas.  He received his undergraduate and law degrees from Texas Tech University in Lubbock, Texas.  He also graduated from the American Graduate School of International Management (Thunderbird) located in Glendale, Arizona. Prior to joining the Foreign Service in 1992, he practiced law in the international section of a private firm in El Paso, Texas.  

John is married to Adriana Acosta, a native of San Luis Potosi, Mexico.  They have a son and a daughter, who attend universities in Indiana and California, respectively.
