Message from Ambassador Nancy Powell

“The chief business of the American people is business,” said U.S. President Calvin Coolidge in 1925, and that still rings true in the 21st century.  Today, American entrepreneurs in small, medium, and large companies are energetically conducting commerce with partners around the world.  The United States and India, both vibrant democracies, have forged a vigorous commercial partnership.  India is now one of the fastest growing large economies in the world, with a young population, large and growing middle class, and huge infrastructure needs.  There are tremendous business opportunities for U.S. companies to partner with India in its ambitious infrastructure development and sustainable inclusive growth plans.  We at the Embassy are happy to help U.S. firms look for opportunities to do business in India.  The United States is always open for business, and we also welcome the interest and investment by Indian companies into America, creating jobs and prosperity for both our countries.

As our two-way commerce grows, it benefits both our countries.  Exchanges of both products and ideas are creating sparks of ingenuity that lead to innovations that improve the quality of our lives.  We have seen such innovations in sectors like information and communication technologies, pharmaceuticals, medical devices, renewable energy, agriculture, and infrastructure.  Many of these advances have resulted from joint ventures and collaborations on a business-to-business and people-to-people level.  I echo what Secretary Clinton said when she visited India in May 2012:  “I truly believe there is much more potential to unleash.  We should be working toward having one of the world’s largest trading relationships, and we need to continue to reduce barriers and open our markets to greater trade and investment.”

As the U.S. Ambassador to India, I will support the progress already achieved and will continually look for ways to open the doors for trade between our countries even wider.  I hope that our current collective hard work will, in the words of Secretary Clinton, “foster generations of innovative thinkers and leaders who will continue to improve the lives of the Indian and American people and contribute to improving the lives of people everywhere.”  As you peruse these business pages and find you still have questions, please feel free to contact directly our economic, commercial, and agricultural officers.  We’re here to keep channels of communication open and help U.S. companies do business in India.
