Renew my Visa

Overview

Repeat travelers to the United States may, under some circumstances, renew their visas without appearing at the U.S. Embassy/Consulate for an interview. Additionally, some governments allow their citizens to travel with a valid visa in an expired passport, provided the traveler also has a valid passport. If your government allows travel with a valid visa and a combination of an expired and valid visa, then the U.S. government will allow you to travel to the United States with your old passport containing a valid visa and your new, valid passport.

Qualifications

You may submit your visa application at one of the designated Mailboxes Etc. offices as a drop box submission and proceed without a consular interview if you meet all of the following qualifications:

You are an Italian citizen or permanent resident of Italy
All ten fingerprints were captured at a prior consular interview (not at the airport)
Your previous visa is currently valid, or has expired within the last twelve months
You are applying for the exact same type of visa as your current/previous visa (except for A, E, G and NATO visas)
Your visa does not have Clearance Received annotated on it
You must be present in Italy.

If all of the above conditions are not met then you must schedule an interview through the call center.

How to Apply

Step 1
Pay the visa application fee at any BNL branch, according to the type of visa you are applying for.

Step 2
Complete the Nonimmigrant Visa Electronic Application - DS-160

Step 3
Follow below document checklist and insert the required documents into a "drop box" package, then seal the package, and make sure you write VISA RENEWAL on the envelope.

Check list:

Your current passport
One passport size photo for each visa applicant, including infants (see the "Photo Requirements" webpage).
Your current or most recent visa
Supporting documentation required for your visa type

Incomplete documentation will result in a delay in processing and possible additional expenses.

B2 Visa: Proof of ties to Italy

C1/D Visa: Current Work Contract

F Visa: Current I-20 and SEVIS payment

H Visa: Current petition

I Visa: Copy of journalistic credential and current contract or letter of employment

J Visa: Current DS-2019 and SEVIS payment

L Visa: Copy of current petition.

M Visa: Current I-20 and SEVIS payment

O, P, Q, R Visas: Copy of current Petition

Note: A, G, NATO and E visa applicants do not follow this procedure in order to have their visa renewed. Please follow instructions on the website on how to apply for these visa categories.

Step 4
Deliver your sealed visa application to one of the four Mail Boxes Etc. designated offices or use a courier to mail the package to them. We strongly discourage applicants from using the normal mailing system.

IMPORTANT:

Using the drop box service does not guarantee visa issuance. In some cases, you may be required to appear for a visa interview at the U.S. Embassy/Consulate.
Reciprocity fees may apply. These are fees another country charges a U.S. citizen for a similar type of visa. The Department of State's website has more information about reciprocity fees and can help you determine if this fee applies to your nationality.

Unqualified applicants, who do not meet the specific requirements, will have to pay Mailboxes for the service and for any eventual expenses to have the package delivered back to them. These applicants will have to contact the call center to schedule an interview.
