Non-Immigrant Visas

We encourage you to carefully read the information provided below in order to find a quicker answer to your question before sending an email to the Non-Immigrant Visa Unit.  Emails for which an answer is not provided below, will be answered within 3 to 5 business days.

Here are some Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) that may help you find a quicker response to your inquiry:

For more FAQs, please click here.

Before contacting the Non-Immigrant Visa Unit, applicants should keep in mind that some visa applications require further administrative processing, which takes additional time after the visa applicant’s interview.  When administrative processing is required, the timing will vary based on the individual circumstances of each case, although most administrative processing is resolved within 60 days of the visa interview.  U.S. Embassy Lima’s Consular Section recommends that visa applicants apply well in advance of their anticipated travel date and wait until they have received their passport with the U.S. visa before making travel plans or buying non-refundable tickets.  For more information regarding administrative processing, please click here.

For information regarding the status of your application and visa denials, email the Consular Section at LimaNIV@state.gov.  Please include:

  • Your full name.
  • The full name of the applicant and your relationship to him/her, if applicable.

Important:  Upon emailing us, you will receive an automatic reply.  Please do not respond to the automatic reply or send multiple emails, as doing so may delay the processing of your inquiry.

For emergencies, you may call 618-2058 and leave a message with your name, telephone number or email, and brief description of your emergency.  A representative from the Embassy will contact you as soon as possible during business hours (8am-4pm).  Please note that only emergency messages will receive a response.  As mentioned on our website, the following categories are considered suitable for emergency calls:

  • Corrections to issued visas
  • Medical (life / death) situations involving the visa applicant or direct relatives
  • Study, work or business travel

Immigrant Visas

Prior to emailing U.S. Embassy Lima, immigrant visa applicants should check to see if their case has arrived from the National Visa Center (NVC).  After the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) approves an immigrant visa petition, it sends the case to the National Visa Center for processing.  The National Visa Center will only send cases to the U.S. Embassy in Lima with current priority dates.  To check if your priority date is current, please review the monthly visa bulletin or contact the National Visa Center.

If the answer to your question cannot be found on our website, immigrant visa petitioners and applicants with questions may email us at LimaIV@state.gov.  Please include:

  • Your full name
  • The full name of the applicant and your relationship to him/her, if applicable
  • Immigrant visa case number (beginning with LMA)

Upon emailing us, you will receive an automatic reply.  Please do not respond to the automatic reply, as doing so may delay the processing of your inquiry.  We aim to answer questions not addressed by out automatic reply, withing 2 business days.

Immigrant visa petitioners and applicants may also call the Embassy at +51-1-618-2000 and ask for the "Immigrant Visa Section", between 2:00pm and 3:00pm, Monday through Friday, to speak with a consular employee about the status of their case.  The Immigrant Visa Section is closed on American and Peruvian Holidays, as well as during scheduled closures.

Fraud Warning: Visa Lottery

  • Peru does not currently qualify to participate in the Diversity Visa Program, commonly referred to as the Visa Lottery.

Fraudulent websites are posing as official U.S. Government sites.  Some companies posing as the U.S. Government have sought money in order to "complete" DV entry forms.  There is no charge to download and complete the Electronic Diversity Visa Entry Form.  To learn more, see the Department of State Warning and the Federal Trade Commission Warning.

The Department of State does not notify successful DV applicants by letter or email.  Entrants can check the status of their entries by visiting the DV Entrant Status Check website.
