U.S. Embassy Announces Passing of Former Ambassador to India Harry G. Barnes

New Delhi | August 10, 2012

Former Ambassador to India, Harry G. Barnes, passed away on Thursday, August 9, 2012. He was 86.  He served as Ambassador to India from 1981 to 1985. While serving as Ambassador, he was actively involved in the development of the US-India Science and Technology Initiative, launched by President Reagan and Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. He was a pioneer in recognizing the importance of sharing and cooperating in the areas of science and technology as a way to further diplomacy. Ambassador Barnes was a career Foreign Service Officer, who in addition to serving as Ambassador to India, served as Ambassador to Romania and Chile, and was the Director General of the Foreign Service and Director of the Carter Center’s Human Rights and Conflict Resolution Programs from 1994-2000. Ambassador Barnes is survived by his wife Elizabeth and his children.
