U.S. Citizen Services

U.S. Citizen Services

The American Citizen Services (ACS) Unit of the Consular Section provides a wide range of services to American citizens visiting or residing in Peru.  Please refer to the links on the left of this page for detailed information about specific services, including passports, reports of birth abroad, and federal benefits (Social Security).

We urge you to sign up for the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) -formerly known as "Travel Registration" or "Registration with Embassies"- if you will be traveling to or living in Peru, so we can better serve you, especially in case of an emergency or disaster.  The ACS Unit posts notices of demonstrations and roadblocks on the Demonstration Notices section of our Emergency Messages page.

How to Make an Appointment

To better serve our American citizen community in Peru, the U.S. Embassy's American Citizen Services Unit requires that all U.S. citizens use the online appointment system for all non-emergency services.  Entry will not be permitted to the ACS section without an appointment.  Non-renewal of your passport in a timely manner does not constitute an emergency.

Please note that if you are more than 15 minutes late to your appointment, you will not be admitted, and will have to make a new appointment.

Emergency Contact

If you are an American citizen with an after-hours life or death emergency, please call our hotline at: 618-2000.

Change in Peruvian Immigration Procedures for Emergency Passports

  • Peru’s Dirección General de Migraciones y Naturalización (DIGEMIN) has changed the procedure for travelers exiting Peru with an emergency passport. In cases of passports that have been lost or stolen, the passenger will not have the entry stamp with which they entered Peru. Therefore they must “transfer” the entry stamp to their new passport before they are allowed to pass through immigration. Previously, travelers were able to complete this process at the Jorge Chavez Airport in Lima. Now, travelers must take their new emergency passport to DIGEMIN headquarters at Av. España 730, Breña, Lima, open weekdays from 8:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. in order to pay for and process the transfer. Read more...
