Welcome to the U.S. President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR) in India

The U.S. President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR) was launched in 2003 to combat global HIV/AIDS - the largest commitment ever by a single nation toward an international health initiative. The initial five-year program committed $30 billion to fight the disease.  In 2008 the United States Global Leadership Against HIV/AIDS, Tuberculosis, and Malaria Reauthorization Act authorized up to $48 billion over the next 5 years to combat global HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis, and malaria.

The global goals of PEPFAR include support for treatment for 2 million HIV infected people, support for prevention of 7 million new infections, and support for care for 10 million people infected or affected by HIV/AIDS.

The PEPFAR program in India started in 2005, bringing together the USG agencies already working on HIV/AIDS in one joint initiative.  Since then, approximately $120 million dollars have been allocated in the areas of HIV prevention, care, treatment and systems strengthening.  In partnership with the Government of India, other bilateral donors, over 90 Indian non-governmental organizations and the private sector, PEPFAR/India supports the key principles of the 'Three Ones.'
