These Students Already Speak a Second Language!

A group of 146 students

146 students aged 14 to 16 have a key to unlock a brighter future – certificates that show they speak English.

They come from different parts of Costa Rica, but have one thing in common.  They come from tough neighborhoods that have few economic opportunities, which can put their future at risk.  But now, 146 students aged 14 to 16 have a key to unlock a brighter future – certificates that show they speak English.

They learned a second language through scholarships offered by the English Access Micro-scholarship program, and with instructors from the Centro Cultural Costarricense NorteAmericano.  The funds are provided through the Central American Regional Security Initiative (CARSI), a United States effort to support citizen security.

For two years, every Saturday morning, these young people dedicated their time and efforts to learn a second language and in doing so, to be better prepared for their future, either in school or the work force.  They were chosen for the program for their academic achievement, leadership, entrepreneurial spirit and their desire to learn English.
