Warden Message

To:                  U.S. Citizens in Sudan
From:             U.S. Embassy Khartoum
Subject:          Risk of Crime in Juba
Date:
              June 13, 2011

This message is to advise U.S. citizens of the continuing high risk of violent crime in Juba.  In recent weeks there has been a notable increase in crime and security-related incidents in Juba, including persons in vehicles being pulled out and beaten.  With the approach of the July 9 independence celebration in Juba, there will be an increased number of police checkpoints and a greater police presence throughout the city, particularly during the evening and nighttime hours.  For these reasons, the U.S. Consulate General in Juba has changed the start of its curfew from 1:00 AM to 11:00 PM.  The United Nations and many NGOs in Juba have also changed the start of their curfew period to 11:00 PM.  Curfew hours for Consulate General personnel are currently from 11:00 PM to 6:00 AM, and will remain at those times until further notice.  During curfew hours, consulate personnel have been directed to remain at the consulate residential compound or other secure location.

The U.S. Embassy in Khartoum provides routine and emergency services to U.S. citizens traveling to or living in Sudan.  However, our ability to provide emergency services to U.S. citizens outside of the Khartoum area is limited.

U.S. citizens in Sudan are encouraged to enroll in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) at http://travel.state.gov.  U.S. citizens without internet access may enroll directly at either the U.S. Embassy in Khartoum or the U.S. Consulate General in Juba.  By enrolling, U.S. citizens make it easier for the Embassy to contact them in the event of an emergency.

U.S. citizens living or traveling in Sudan should regularly monitor the U.S. Embassy’s website, http://sudan.usembassy.gov, and the U.S. Department of State's website, http://travel.state.gov, where the current Worldwide Caution, Travel Warnings, Travel Alerts, and Country Specific Information can be found.  The U.S. Embassy also encourages U.S. citizens to review "A Safe Trip Abroad", which includes valuable security information for those both living and traveling abroad.  In addition to information on the Internet, travelers may obtain up-to-date information on security conditions by calling 1-888-407-4747 toll-free in the U.S. and Canada, or outside the U.S. and Canada on a regular toll line at 1-202-501-4444.
