Destitution

Americans who find themselves destitute in Brazil may request the assistance of the Embassy/ Consulate to return to the United States. The US consular officer has no funds available for welfare services because the US Congress does not provide funds to give or loan to US citizens in need. The Embassy/Consulate will call your family and friends to arrange for money to be wired to you. If no resources are found, citizens can apply for a repatriation loan to purchase a one-way ticket directly back to the United States. In these cases citizens will have to sign a promissory note agreeing to repay the loan to the US Government.
