Health

The United States Government through the Embassy of the United States for Barbados and the Eastern Caribbean supports and promotes health across the region by contributing to the improvement of the health systems of each country and strengthening the capacity of regional institutions.  By leveraging resources allocated for HIV/AIDS through the President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR), the United States is able to contribute to improved health outcomes across the region.

In order to transparently and effectively provide assistance, a U.S.-Caribbean Regional HIV/AIDS Partnership Framework was developed in close collaboration with Caribbean country partners and regional stakeholders.  The Framework takes a country-centered approach, recognizing that sustainable, comprehensive, gender sensitive and country-driven programs are essential to overall regional success in reducing the spread and impact of disease, particularly HIV/AIDS.

Through an extensive country consultation process, the Partnership Framework has been aligned with partner priorities and objectives.  A major focus of this Framework model is to expand partner countries’ capacity to plan, oversee, finance, and manage their national response to HIV and AIDS and to deliver quality services with the participation of local civil society, groups of persons living with HIV/AIDS, and the private sector.

The overall result of these technical assistance Partnership Framework activities should be robust national government and regional agency leadership in policy formulation and in providing cost-effective national and regional public goods and services, as well as strengthened capacity to provide key financial and technical resources to sustain health service delivery ensuring access to those persons most in need.

Recognizing the complexity of the region’s health challenges and priorities, the US Government has brought to bear the expertise and experience of six separate US Government agencies. Each bringing their respective strengths to the region, and working towards unique objectives, they share a common goal of improving livelihoods through better health.
