The Department of Justice (DOJ) serves to enforce the law and defend the interests of the United States according to the law, to ensure public safety against threats foreign and domestic, to provide federal leadership in preventing and controlling crime, to seek just punishment for those guilty of unlawful behavior, and to ensure fair and impartial administration of justice for all Americans. The Department’s resources ensures the operation of the Federal Bureau of Investigation, Bureau of Prisons, Drug Enforcement Administration, U.S. Marshals Service, and Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives amongst many other organizations.

DOJ uses 116.3 million gross square feet of space, of which 84.2 million gross square feet is Federally owned and 32.1 million is leased. The graph to the right shows the different types of space the DOJ uses. The Bureau of Prison facilities and Administrative Law Enforcement Training facilities alone owned or directly leased 67,530,584 square feet. Additionally, DOJ rents 48M square feet of space through GSA. The "All Others" slice of the graph is made up of numerous minor categories that includes laboratories, hospitals, prisons & detention centers and industrial buildings.

Breakdown of Reduction

DOJ will utilize shared space within DOJ and with other DOJ components where possible by reviewing its portfolio assets to identify and release underutilized space. It will implement new sustainability guidelines. DOJ intends to seek rent rate reductions through re-negotiation of existing leases or upon their expiration as well as constrain construction costs wherever possible by reducing scope of the projects and implementing space consolidations. DOJ will implement a revised space allocation standard and expand tele-work options where feasible.

The FBI chose to reduce the square footage for its federal construction projects in San Juan and Miami for a total savings of $85 million. This accrued to the GSA goal since it was funded through the Public Buildings Fund.
