For several years Alliance Nations have been acquiring weapons and sensors to develop national capabilities against the threat of ballistic missile attack. Recently NATO has begun to build a command and control network to coordinate these various radars and interceptor systems, making NATO forces safer from the threat of short- and medium-range attacks. This NATO BMD system will be the most sophisticated of its type in the world, and will be the only system which can integrate all Alliance defences, including the combat-proven Patriot interceptor. The U.S. European Phased Adaptive Appproach initiative is unfolding, of course, but the illustrations below give you a snap-shot of the types of systems that make up both the interim capability, and the initial operational capability, as well.

The 18 images below are either part of the initial NATO missile defence architecture or of future interest.
