Sergeant Major Elliott enlisted in the Marine Corps in May 1987 and attended recruit training at MCRD, San Diego, California on 1 March 1988. Upon graduation, he reported for training at the Infantry Training Battalion, Camp Geiger, North Carolina as a 0351 Infantry Assaultman.

In August 1988, Sergeant Major Elliott was assigned to Marine Barracks 8th & I, Washington, D.C. where he served as a Marine security guard. While assigned to Camp David, Presidential Retreat, he was promoted to Corporal and awarded the Presidential service badge. He was reassigned in October 1989 to Marine Barracks 8th & I and served as section leader, Marine security, White House Communication Agency.

In October 1992, Sergeant Major Elliott reported to Company D, 2nd Light Armored Infantry Battalion, where he served as a Section Leader and Platoon Sergeant. He was promoted to the rank of Sergeant and participated in numerous field exercises; and contingency operations in support of operations Deny Flight and Provide Promise, as a member of the 24th MEU (SOC).

Sergeant Major Elliott reported to Drill Instructor School, MCRD, Parris Island, South Carolina in October 1996. He was assigned to, 2nd Recruit Training Battalion where he served as a Drill Instructor and Senior Drill Instructor with Company E, and as the Battalion Training SNCOIC. He was promoted to the rank of Staff Sergeant on 1 April 1997.

In March 2000, Sergeant Major Elliott was transferred to 4th Marine Regiment in Okinawa, Japan. He was assigned as the Regimental Assistant Operations Chief and deployed with the regiment through out the Far East.

Sergeant Major Elliott reported to Company B, 2nd Light Armored Reconnaissance Battalion, in April 2001, where he served as a Platoon Sergeant, Platoon Commander and Company Gunnery Sergeant. While assigned to Company B he was promoted to Gunnery Sergeant and in 2003 deployed with the battalion in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom. In 2004 he assumed the duties of Company First Sergeant and deployed with the company in support of Operation Provide Comfort in Haiti.

In January 2005, Sergeant Major Elliott reported to 1st Battalion, 6th Marines for assignment as Company First Sergeant, Company B. He deployed with the battalion to Fallujah, Iraq in support of OIF 04-06 in March 2005.

In March 2006, Sergeant Major Elliott reported to the School of Infantry - East as the First Sergeant, Company A, Infantry Training Battalion. In July 2007 he was reassigned as the First Sergeant for the Advanced Infantry Training Company, until his selection to Sergeant Major.

Sergeant Major Elliott was transferred to Marine Wing Support Squadron 374, in March of 2009, for duty as the Squadron Sergeant Major.

Sergeant Major Elliott assumed his present position as the Battalion Sergeant Major, 3d Light Armored Reconnaissance Battalion on 12 February 2010 and deployed with the battalion in support of OEF 10.2.

Sergeant Major Elliott's personal awards include the Bronze Star, Purple Heart, Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal with gold stars in lieu of 5th award, Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal with Combat Distinguishing Device and gold stars in lieu of 3d award, Combat Action Ribbon with gold stars in lieu of 3d award and the Presidential Service Badge.
